When 15 year-old Chérif is caught speeding in a stolen car, his mother is at the end of her rope. With the approval of a judge, she sends Chérif to Strasburg to live with his aunt and uncle. Between his training as a bricklayer and his uncle’s harsh discipline, Chérif is seething. In the gloom and doom of his life, Thomas, his apparently goody-two shoes cousin, takes him in the new world of street art. Every night, like “stained-glass craftsmen, the modern illuminators of our grey walls” (Olivier Séguret), Chérif and a clandestine gang paint the Alsatian city with their spray cans in perfect lawlessness defying all the dangers.
Zinedine Benchenine, who has his character down pat, carries the film with a brilliant cast of actors with no less than Marina Foïs, Ramzy Beda, Jean-Marc Barr and Emile Berling. “A moving, poetic film that blends teenage straying with street art beauty. Hélier Cisterne depicts a soft airy universe where he glorifies graffiti art and makes it look almost sacred”(Mathilde Parapiglia). Adrenaline pumping adventures for all generations with a mixture of humour, romance, action, thriller and social drama.
