“Ménilmontant, yes indeed, Madam… This is where I left my heart. This is where I come to get my soul back, all my ardour back, all my happiness back…” Joël, known as Jo, comes back to his neighbourhood after 15 years spent in prison. Times have changed: hooligans are now in control and nobody is spared. Alain Minier, the filmmaker, knows what he is talking about: he grew up in Ménilmontant where he’s been all his life. This Parisian neighbourhood plays an integral part in the film with poetry exuding from each of its little streets and its panoramic views. Realism is set right thanks to the superb acting of Olivier Marchal as the lost gangster forced to deal with a new reality and Smaïn as the harassed bar owner. Aiming at denouncing the endemic violence committed by increasingly younger teens, this thriller is at once heart and gut wrenching. Alain Minier skillfully intertwines touches of humour in the midst of harsh crimes, suspense and humanity to achieve a really great thriller, the kind they don’t make any more.
